この詩を始めて目にしたのは、呉智英の文庫からであった。
彼は誰か碩学の訳を引いたあとに、自らの言葉に換えた……と覚えているが、手元にその文庫がないのと、探す気力がないので補完は後日。本当はいろんなことが重なって、gone insameの三歩くらい手前なんだが、それを説明する気力もないくらいなのでそれもまた無理である。
私の記憶では、この冒頭は
何人も孤島にてはあらず
何人も自らにて全きはなし
人はみな大いなる陸のかけら
だったのだが、たしか碩学のほうが
なんびとも一島嶼にてはあらず、
なんびともみずからにして全きはなし、
人はみな 大陸 くが の 一塊 ひとくれ 、
本土のひとひら
これだったと思う。英語よりかえって難しい。
もとはJohn Donneの一遍の詩だが、これはヘミングウェイの「誰がために鐘はなる」で引用されることによって有名になった。
